How the word checker works

Every word is checked against the same 270,000+ word dictionary that powers all of Kipi's solvers, and scored with the printed tile values from each game. That means a word you verify here will also show up in the unscrambler and the Scrabble finder — and a word that fails here is one you should not risk challenging in a real game.

Scrabble letter values

PointsLetters
1A E I O U L N S T R
2D G
3B C M P
4F H V W Y
5K
8J X
10Q Z

Words With Friends prints different values on several tiles — J jumps to 10, B, C, M and P rise to 4, and U drops in value relative to its letter count. The checker above shows both totals for every word.

Word checker FAQ

Is QI a valid Scrabble word?

Yes. QI (the circulating life force in Chinese philosophy) is a valid Scrabble word and scores 11 points in Scrabble and 11 points in Words With Friends. Short words with Q and Z are some of the most useful plays in the game.

Which dictionary does this checker use?

This checker uses the same 270,000+ word game dictionary as every Kipi tool, so a word that checks out here will also appear in the unscrambler, Scrabble finder, and other solvers on this site. Official tournament lists (NWL for North America, CSW for international play) differ slightly at the edges, so confirm close calls against your game's own dictionary.

Does a blank tile change the score?

No. A blank tile can stand for any letter and the word is still valid, but the blank itself scores 0 points. This checker shows the full printed tile value for every letter, so subtract the value of any letter you played as a blank.

Why are the Scrabble and Words With Friends scores different?

The two games print different values on some tiles. J is worth 8 in Scrabble but 10 in Words With Friends, B is 3 in Scrabble but 4 in Words With Friends, and several other letters differ by a point or two. This checker shows both scores side by side.

What if my word is not valid?

Check the spelling first, then try the unscrambler link under the result. It rearranges the same letters into every valid word our dictionary knows, which often turns a near-miss into a playable word.
