How to play Boggle
Boggle is played on a 4×4 grid of letter dice. Shake the grid, then find as many words as you can before the timer runs out:
- Words must be 3 or more letters long.
- Build words by connecting adjacent letters — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
- Each die may be used only once per word, but you can reuse dice across different words.
- The letter Q always counts as Qu.
- When time is up, players compare lists — any word found by more than one player is crossed off both lists.
Boggle scoring
Only words unique to your list score. Points follow the official Boggle scale:
| Word length | Points |
|---|---|
| 3–4 letters | 1 point |
| 5 letters | 2 points |
| 6 letters | 3 points |
| 7 letters | 5 points |
| 8+ letters | 11 points |
The solver shows each word’s point value and your board’s total possible score.
Boggle tips
- Hunt common endings first. Paths ending in -ING, -ERS, -EST, and -ED multiply fast on a good board.
- Use the Qu tile early. It eats two letters of length in one step, so Qu-starting words score cheap points.
- Work the corners last. Corner dice have only 3 neighbors instead of 8, so they anchor fewer words.
- Pluralize everything. If PLAY works, check PLAYS — an extra S tile nearby is a free point.
Boggle solver FAQ
How does a Boggle solver work?
A Boggle solver scans every possible letter path on the 4×4 grid — each tile can connect to any of its 8 neighbors, and no tile may be reused within a single word. It checks each path against a dictionary using a prefix tree (trie), which lets it abandon dead-end paths early. The result is every valid 3+ letter word on the board, usually found in under a second.
What is the highest scoring Boggle word?
In standard Boggle scoring, any word of 8 or more letters earns 11 points — the maximum per word. Longer words are rare on a 4×4 board, so most high scores come from finding many 5–7 letter words (2, 3, and 5 points each) rather than a single long word.
Can you reuse letters in Boggle?
No. Within a single word, each die (tile) may be used only once. You can reuse the same tile in different words, but a word’s path may never visit the same cell twice. Letters connect horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
