Free Hangman Solver
Stuck on a hangman board? Enter the pattern you can see and the letters you have ruled out — the solver lists every word that still fits, most likely answers first.
Solve your hangman pattern
Directions: type your word with revealed letters in place and an underscore _ for each hidden letter (for example _A__E). Then add any letters you have guessed that are not in the word, and tap Find matching words. Tap any result to read its definition.
How the hangman solver works
The solver searches the full Kipi dictionary — 270,000+ words — for words the exact length of your pattern that match every revealed letter, avoid every excluded letter, and keep hidden spots free of letters already revealed (on a real board, a revealed letter shows everywhere it appears). Matches are then ranked by letter frequency, so everyday words made of common letters rise to the top. In a live game, pick your next guess from a letter that appears in many of the top matches.
Hangman tips
- Guess E, A, and R early. They are the most common letters in English; most boards reveal something with those three guesses.
- Watch the word shape. A pattern like _A_E is usually a vowel-consonant-vowel frame (BAKE, CAFE, DATE) — test common third letters like K, F, T, and M.
- Update exclusions every guess. One forgotten wrong letter can hide the answer at the bottom of a long list.
- Splitting beats guessing. Choose the letter that divides the remaining list most evenly — each answer cuts the possibilities fastest.
Hangman solver FAQ
How do I enter the pattern?
Type the word exactly as the game shows it: revealed letters in their positions and an underscore for every hidden letter, like _A__E. The solver treats the pattern length as the word length, so five characters means a five-letter word.
What goes in the excluded letters box?
Every letter you have already guessed that is NOT in the word. The solver removes any word containing those letters, and it also assumes blank spots cannot be a letter that is already revealed elsewhere in the pattern — just like a real hangman board.
Why are the results sorted the way they are?
Matches are ranked by letter frequency: words built from common letters (E, A, R, I, O, T, N, S) are statistically more likely answers, so they appear first. Rarer-letter words sink to the bottom — check them when the common ones do not fit your board.
Can the solver guarantee the answer?
It guarantees a complete list of dictionary words that fit your pattern and exclusions. In a live game the answer is always in the list if your pattern is entered correctly — your next guess should test a letter that splits the remaining list.
